Welcome to a new installment of the project.
This time a very special game, the Remake of Resident Evil 4, we waited up to this day to review the complete pack with Separate Ways and maybe a word or two about mercenaries.
Let's start this!
TL;DR Section:
Chronicles Conclusion:
Highly recommended
Pros:
High Replayability
Fun And Dinamic Gameplay
Diversified Combat
More "Logical" Story
No Quick Time Events
Parry
Cons:
Charm System
Request System Are Very Basic
Pro Difficulty Needs A Tweak
RNG Works Mildly Well
Brief Resume:
An action/horror game that plays around both sectors in an amazing way.
You're Leon S Kennedy, special agent on a mission to rescue the president daughter, is a 3D with an over the shoulder camera and fast, visceral and implacable enemies so you must stay sharp.
Scary isn't it? |
The Story:
This section will be a little on the short side because it's kinda hard to draw the line between spoilers and reminding of the 2004 Resident Evil 4.
We start the same way as the original, on a car riding to the village than everyone already knows, but from the very beginning we start to see bits of difference between versions.
In this one Leon directly acknowledge the events from Resident Evil 2 and the implications of being the survivor, chained to the government and obligated to do special training with the army and Krauser.
As you can see nothing to worry about but put the stones for a more detailed and logical story for a universe of games with zombies and bioweapons.
Poor dude |
We are on the way of to a new story, there will be some images of bosses from the classic in this new game but nothing to harsh, the surprises will remain hidden.
From this point on, almost everything on the game is reintroduced in a way or another and for the sake of a good review of the remake I will consider that our readers know about the original to a little degree.
What's up old buddy |
No worries if not, just ignore the next image for spoilers of one of the first bosses.
Enemies like ganados, the "people" of the castle or the merchant that everyone remembers are here again, but stay with me when I say that there will be surprises.
The scenarios are fairly similar but never the same as the one down on 2004, it's obvious the inspiration but even the order of events is different here and take my opinion on this, they make more sense this way.
The other parts of the game like the whole next levels are something to expect, specifically the island that come fully reworked for good and certain bosses, Krauser isn't a cut scene with quick time events anymore.
Hail to the king |
The pacing:
This is one of the worst characteristics of the Resident Evil saga, they almost never nail the pacing.
Let me explain it, in all the games (if you have played at least one you will understand immediately) you start with a knife if you're lucky or a little pistol a while later after starting.
The beggining is always a struggle to survive because you're learning and getting better equipment.
The ending sections are always a party all over the place because the terror as disappeared and the players are buddies with the army arsenal so not much the game can do.
Look at this and don't be scared to the bone I dare you |
This games focus the problem surprisingly well, the original also had this pacing problem but for me has been almost solved here.
The shifts between horror and action are going to have you on the edge for all the game, the point is that you don't feel so comfortable, with 2 interesting points.
Corny jokes are here too! |
1.- Combat:
The combat of this game is unrelenting and savage, one or two mistakes and you're done for, this works for staying in your toes all the time and full concentration.
A couple of combats in and probably you will be on the mood of a killing machine, not exactly the best for a game that sells as "Horror" too.
As cinematic as it seems, don't be fooled you can be killed in a few blows in the most hard difficulties |
2.- Exploration & Sudden Encounters
Scenarios are greatly variable and full of things to see but they're also not exactly inviting to be explored if you catch my drift, is a horror game too so what's can be expected in the shadows and unknown whereabouts?
Yeah sometimes you will face the dirty tricks of classic survival horrors like jumpscares for a variety of reasons.
This will be letting you know that not everything is so straight forward and shift your gears in case your adrenaline is over the roof to the ground, you know that you're not in charge.
Armed to the teeth but scared to step forward |
The Parry:
This will be short and to the point but let me explain a bit.
The combat by itself don't need explanation, is a normal combat from a shoulder view with special inputs like the melees or the knife executions.
With that aside let me say this briefly, this game deletes all the limitations of the original.
If you remember or not, back in the day when an enemy was dangerously near you, they slowed a bit or dragged a little of time, this was the game buying you time to react, with the due limitations to gameplay of that time, that was fair play.
The smooth transition between parry and melee is so satisfying |
Now is another story, the enemies are relentless and never touch the heart before attacking straight up.
To be fair, the parry mechanics were created by this factor, if you want to run or dodge, Leon is kinda heavy for a skilled agent so that would be plain impossible for all the attacks in the game.
The premise is simple, you're a master at the knife and close quarter combat so any attack with a weapon can be dodged or parried by clicking the button before the attack connects (to dodge grabs is the same premise but with the crouch button).
As long as you have a knife (because they have durability) you can parry, execute or in difficulties below the most hard one block almost all the attacks.
You can defend of grabs the same way as Re2R |
The Map & Enemies:
You know, Resident Evil 8 has a crazy good map for exploring and finding treasures, with all that backtracking to the village one time after another, was a surprise every visit.
4 Remake does it's own effort, I cannot say that I like more this one than 8 but they're both crazy good for exploring to your heart content, my only concern could be that this one have a lot of more easily losable treasures than 8 but that's it... Maybe.
On another post, the enemies in RE4 are back in force with a couple of new additions or reworks to old ones, like the pig headed dudes.
You can clearly see the damage you're doing so nice points |
Hey, who could be mad with this girl? |
The Merchant looks pretty |
Now it's time to tackle Separate Ways a bit.
Oh yeah Luis appears more too but I would have wished that it appeared a bit more |
Separate Ways:
Ada's back dudes and we need to talk about it, the beginning is awesome and very Ada style.
The dlc overall worth the price, is tremendously good, for starters it took me around 7 hours exploring every bit and cranny and raging with some bosses on hardcore.
The gameplay is basically the same as Leon, the melees are fairly different animations and the weapons, the classics with a bit of craziness with one in special.
Talking about the scenarios, they follow the logic of the original but starts in a different location and at some point rendezvous with Luis to continue the path as always.
It's fun and if you itches some more Re4r gameplay this will be up your alley, also expands the story a bit and that's always welcomed.
We have a couple of nice surprises too, the boss fights are as good as the campaign ones and the pacing works, something pretty hard to be honest.
Separate Ways has a lot more input actions than the campaign ones |
To wrap this up, let's talk about the grappling gun, Ada's signature gun works for more than cinematics on this dlc.
We will be traveling around the same maps than Leon but with this on the bag we can explore new locations inside the big maps, also you can fight with it for example grappling near enemies or buying a certain charm.
The merchant will be here, he has some specific shop for every character but you can do the same as the campaign, buy or upgrade.
Also he sells some very interesting charms and other things around the way so don't forget to visit him.
A nice touch to feel like a great agent, a mission, danger, a hook and a parallel agent on his own work, totally recommended.
Anyway thanks for reaching the end!
