Retrospective - Super Paper Mario - Different Gameplay - Same Great Saga

Welcome to a new installment of The Chronicles Of A Gamer.

The last game of the original trilogy, we already cover The Thousand Year Door, my favorite game of all time, but this one in my opinion was a huge success and a bright future to the saga that well... We all know how it ended.

TL;DR

Chronicles Conclusion:

Very recommended

Brief resume:

Nice gameplay with a story nothing short of awesome but repetitive combat on certain moments, great world design and characters, overall pretty fun.

Pros:

Great use of the 3D

Solid and interesting story

Well crafted gameplay with an Rpg touch

Unique and charismatic characters/villains

Every hero has is respective rival

Cons:

Some times tends to be easy and repetitive

Platforming sections are simple  and easy

Partners aren't as great as before

Try to be an "open world" with mixed metroidvania(tends to make you explore and stop you in the tracks) making the exploration not as rewarding as could be

The Story:

By far the best point of the game, well writted characters, the story works in a organic way that simply feels right to unravel it, chapter by chapter.

We start with a scene that's to more than one person confused and intrigued on the same quantity, the wedding of Peach and Bowser.

Great job on keeping that interest on the roof from the beginning

A little after we learn about the hearts of chaos and we see a black hole slowly growing up in the sky as a reminder, that the end of the world is near.

On a first glance we have a basic colectaton story but the characters and writting are top notch, the game has a lot of secrets and plots that unravel back to back with the main story.

That sounds normal but the fact that a lot of them are very hidden and the game presents them in the exact moment.

Every chapter has their gimmicks, the base of gameplay and combat is the same but the chapters do their own thing for the sake of diversity.

The World&Gameplay:

As I said before, the game has a chapters structure but the structure is far more basic than it's predecessors.

We have a section on the main map with doors that are basically the only way to get ahold the story.

Inside every chapter has "levels" but they're only a little loading screen to change something around the world or mark an important part.

The story chapters are separated from the main hub that is Flip side, each one has it's atmosphere, tone and gimmicks, also a lot of surprises.

Instead of unique ways to enter every chapter, we have to find the respective pillars.
A drawback in my opinion

The first couple of chapters seem pretty straight forward with platforming and basic enemies.

Slowly but surely the game starts sending you more savage and different things to help you be more invested in the gameplay.

We have to talk about the 3D power, aside from the gameplay change, this is the most interesting addition to the saga.

Basically we can flip our viewpoint and character to a 3D view without losing the 2D background.

The animations are on point, simple but fast foe a quick transition

The bosses are another story, some of them uses the classic gameplay combat but everyone has it's twists to keep the things fresh.

Storywise every one of them are interesting and along the game we will develop rivalry with certain ones, the personality is on point and changes accordingly to the story plot.

For example one fight has the classic hit the weak spot that's very obvious but the interesting part is how to get to that part, use the powers to your disposition and unravel the secret.

Some are tutorials glorified for an ability mastering

This gives a freshness to the game because a lot of tricks and secrets works along this new power, new sections, entirely new doors or areas, characters hidden in this position, etc...

We have a limit before we are forced to go back normal view but that bar recharges automatically so not much limits our exploration

The Protagonists:

To nobody secret, we have different characters to control and everyone of them have special abilities but for the sake of not spoiling anything  the information will be limited.

I will talk about the abilities and that's it, the characters aren't exactly an spoiler because the main portrait basically explains everything.

Also (The back cover of the game says everything but I don't think that lot of people have seen it before) so let's start.

Don't forget that we have partners, basic but useful so I take it over nothing

Mario our old pal have the ability of transferring himself to the 3D side of the world and are the most balanced fighter.

Luigi has the classic ability of jumping higher than normal but has this feeling of being walking on ice.

Peach has the classic hovering around and a little shield on the combat side.

Bowser can breathe fire and are the strongest fighter of the team and also the most slower.

They don't get along at the very beginning so character development is on the way

In Conclusion:

We have an excellent game in hands, the problems that I detected were little by comparison to the rest of the game.

The gameplay has some repetition that for me wasn't a problem but I understand why that can be trouble for some people.

One of the best parts of the game are the principal boss fights but I talk little about them because they're some of the surprises that the game reserves so expect them to be good at least.

The 3D blends excellent on the gameplay and combat sometimes

Is a controversial game because has some lows but the highs are nothing short of a masterpiece because the quality is there, just like The Thousand Year Door with the awesome chapters and the repetitive nature of some others.

A couple of times feels like a different experience like strange basic chapters followed by some pretty cool ones in a short time.

Thanks for reaching the end, hope that we can continue counting with your support!

Not gonna lie, the ending put a tear or two in my eyes
